Artist's Comments

The eyes are usually the last part I put in a drawing. I think I managed to capture the milky translucency pretty well. This self portrait (painted from my mirror image) was created in Corel Painter in fourteen hours with the "artists oils" tool. The background was created in about an hour using the clouds filter and various other filters (including lighting effects) in Adobe Photoshop. It's supposed to look like one of those batiked cloths that portrait photographers use, since I'm going to attempt to submit it as my senior portrait (there have been some pretty crappy senior photos in our yearbook. They'd better accept this).
Thanks for visiting.

I already commented on Facebook, but this is still really cool! I like the shading.

Thanks! Hey, you have Painter, don't you? You should try it out. The brushes can be laggy, especially for painting big areas (probably better to open an empty document and do it there). It's way easier to get a traditional media feel than it is in Photoshop.

Do you mean Corel painter? I might try that again sometime. (Painter and I didn't get along last time I worked with it.)

Yeah, Corel Painter. Version X stopped working for me (but then, so did a lot of my computer, so we had to start over and reinstall the system and everything else). Just make sure your canvas and brushes aren't too big and you don't have too many layers/masks (that's why my time sucking paintings are so small... you can't do anything if your brushes lag).
:iconmare-of-night:
That's probably what annoyed me about it. I always work at 300 resolution or more.

I always work at a low resolution (luckily, the 23 hour painting was done at 300 DPI 8x10. This one is 250 DPI 8x10. I just tell myself that no one will ever want to see these things bigger. And you can't see the imperfections and flaws when they're smaller... You don't have to put those extra five hours or more (or ten).
Maybe I use too many layers to have big paintings. I figure that by the time I am a good painter, computers will be able to handle large canvasses, or I was considering having separate documents for each group of layers, like I did for my movie. I think that was a bit of the reason I became enamored with the gradient mask... It has endless enlargement possibilities (but it looks nothing like a painting). Still, it would be fun to make one gradient mesh picture.

Interesting idea with keeping different layers in differend documents. I'd considered doing that for my big dragon, but I ended up just dealing with the lag.

I guess it doesn't matter so much for Photoshop, because you're just adding colors over other colors, but in Painter, you have to keep the pen down so you can blend the strokes in, and the program sort of stops working when there's lag. I'm kind of tempted to use Photoshop next, but then I'd have to figure out custom brushes, and I think Painter would be more useful for applying to traditional media.
